Screening starts at 6:00pm Limited Partnership is the love story between Filipino-American Richard Adams and his Australian husband, Tony Sullivan. In 1975, thanks to a courageous county clerk in Boulder, CO, Richard and Tony were one of the first same-sex couples in the world to be legally married. Richard immediately filed for a green card for Tony based on their marriage. But unlike most heterosexual married couples who easily file petitions and obtain green cards, Richard received a denial letter from the Immigration and Naturalization Service stating, “You have failed to establish that a bona fide marital relationship can exist between two faggots.” Outraged at the tone, tenor and politics of this letter and to prevent Tony’s impending deportation, the couple sued the U.S. government. This became the first federal lawsuit seeking equal treatment for a same-sex marriage in U.S. history. Over four decades of legal challenges, Richard and Tony figured out how to maintain their sense of humor, justice and whenever possible, their privacy. Their personal tale parallels the history of the LGBT marriage and immigration equality movements, from the couple signing their marriage license in Colorado, to the historic U.S. Supreme Court rulings on gay marriage in June 2013. Limited Partnership celebrates Richard and Tony’s long path towards justice and citizenship as they challenge the traditional definitions of “spouse” and “family.” This tenacious story of love, marriage and immigration equality is as precedent setting as it is little known... until now. Richard and Tony’s personal journey is set against 40 years of historical and political clashes. These critical moments in history are explored through the use of television news clips, newspaper headlines, radio announcements, Tony and Richard’s personal photos and letters, interviews, and animated graphics. Through artful juxtaposition, these sequences dynamically contrast Richard and Tony’s personal battle with the evolution of America’s values, the LGBT and mainstream marriage equality movement, and modifications in U.S. immigration policy. Screening starts at 2:30pm How Jack Became Black explores the impact of the multiracial baby boom upon Identity Politics-driven America, a country that has shed much blood on the color line. The recent births of Jack and June, the third multiracial generation in filmmaker Eli Steele’s family, coincided with a startling projection: by the year 2050, at least 20% of all Americans will self-identify as two or more races. What will this fate mean to a nation that has been tormented by race throughout its history? Born to a black father and a Jewish mother, Steele has long battled the forces of identity politics, from college campuses to places of employment. He believed that holding onto his individuality over being reduced to skin color was part of America’s promise to him. However, Steele's belief in this promise was shaken when his son was denied entrance to a public school for refusing to name his "primary race." Why did race still matter so much? Had identity politics, with its promise of redeeming America from the old ethos of white supremacy, delivered us to a new racial order where skin color, once again, trumped character? To find out, Steele journeys into uncharted territory where he takes on identity politics through interviews with multiracial individuals, and through thoughtful re-examinations of headline controversies -- the George Zimmerman trial, a conference on white privilege, and the DeBlasio campaign. The result is an unvarnished look at race in America from the perspective of a man with no allegiance to a single tribe. Ice Cream Social & Bone Marrow Donor Drive St. Roch Community Church 1738 St. Roch Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70117 3:00 to 6:00pm We're coming together on LOVING DAY WEEKEND to celebrate the rich diversity of New Orleans families and the legacy of RICHARD & MILDRED LOVING, the interracial couple whose 1967 landmark civil rights lawsuit, Loving v. Virginia ended all race-based legal restrictions on marriage. Please join us for our 8th Annual Ice Cream Social. We'll have frozen treats (while they last), kids crafts and prizes, face painting, family photos, vendors, community groups and more! The Loving Festival is also collaborating with BE THE MATCH to connect blood cancer patients with life-saving bone marrow donors. Help us reach our goal of registering 50 new donors from the Greater New Orleans Area. Multiethnic individuals are encouraged to participate. Donor candidates must be 18-44 years old to register and willing to donate to any patient. Adults 45 and older must join online and pay a small registration fee. Please support the New Orleans Loving Festival and other nonprofits on GiveNola Day - a 24-hour, online giving event organized by the Greater New Orleans Foundation to inspire charitable giving to nonprofits that make our region stronger, and create a thriving community for all. We're providing free books about King and Chávez to youth members of "Her Voice, Her Story, Her Future" and luncheon attendees (while they last).
