The New Orleans Loving Festival is seeking participants for a new photography project called "WE ARE FAMILY." Participating families will be featured on the Loving Festival's website, social media pages, and in a 2019 photo exhibition that celebrates the diversity of New Orleans families.
Families will be photographed in their homes or another location to be determined, and asked to provide a short bio to accompany their photo. Participating families will receive a free photograph by New Orleans based artist, Leona Strassberg Steiner. Please contact Jerald L. The 7th Annual New Orleans Loving Festival is looking for 50 great stamp designs to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Loving v Virginia Supreme Court decision. If selected, your stamp design will be featured in a limited edition Loving Festival Philatelic Collection and Exhibition.
STAMP SUBMISSIONS must include your name, address, short bio, a high resolution artist photo, and up to 10 stamp illustration submissions. The DEADLINE for receiving submissions is Tuesday, March 31, 2017 at Midnight - Central Standard Time. You will need to create a Submittable User Account to submit your stamp designs. Your stamp design should include the phrase "Loving v Virginia Supreme Court Decision, 50 Year Commemoration 1967 - 2017." Visit www.charitablefilmnetwork.submittable.com/submit to apply. Enter the Blended Books Club's 2017 Youth Essay & Poster Contest and you could receive a cash prize, certificate and have your essay or artwork featured in a Loving Festival publication or exhibition.
The poster and essay contest is open to residents in the New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area - age 18 and younger at time of submission. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 essays and 3 posters! First place winners receive $100, second place $75 and third place $50. Winners will be announced in June of 2017. #DignityInProcess is a multidisciplinary platform in response to the Black Lives Matter movement merging art activism, ancestral healing, and intersectional identity evolution within the Afro-Indigenous Diaspora. Bringing together movement, ritual, storytelling, and collective artmaking, #DignityInProcess draws upon the practices that have sourced the resilience of our ancestors for generations. Gathering Wisdom Councils of Mixed Race, African-Native American, and Creole elders—multigenerational conversations lay the foundation for embodied accountability to sustain a movement of Black Liberation. Afro-futures emerge through site-specific performances, subversive theatre direct actions, and community workshops celebrating the dignity of Black evolution.

ELIGIBILITY: The writing contest is open to middle and high school students in the Greater New Orleans Community, age 18 and younger. ESSAY TOPICS: Richard and Mildred Loving, Loving v. Virginia, Loving Day, the Multiracial Experience, Intersectionality, Colorism, Colorblindness, and Racism/White Supremacy. JUDGING: Essays will be judged by Loving Festival staff and volunteers, based on the following criteria: Knowledge of essay topic, development of the topic, and clarity of ideas.
