Wednesday, June 12th - Loving Day Film Screening
The Loving Story by Nancy Buirski
Ashé Cultural Arts Center
1712 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.
New Orleans, LA 70113
6:00pm to 8:00pm
When Mildred and Richard Loving were arrested in July 1958, in Virginia, for violating a state law that banned marriage between people of different races, such laws had been on the books in most states since the seventeenth century. But the Lovings never expected to be woken up in their bedroom in the middle of the night and arrested. There will be a short discussion following the screening. Admission Free.
Presented by Ashé Cultural Arts Center with support from the New Orleans Loving Festival.

We'll have readings about civil rights advocates, refreshments, prizes, and free books (while supplies last). Community Book Center will also offer a wide variety of books and merchandise for sale. Admission is FREE so tell all your friends! Featured Books: CORETTA SCOTT by Ntozake Shange and Kadir Nelson Walking many miles to school in the dusty road, young Coretta Scott knew the unfairness of life in the segregated south. A yearning for equality began to grow. Together with Martin Luther King, Jr., she gave birth to a vision of change through nonviolent protest. It was the beginning of a journey—with dreams of freedom for all. This extraordinary union of poetic text by Ntozake Shange and monumental artwork by Kadir Nelson captures the movement for civil rights in the United States and honors its most elegant inspiration, Coretta Scott. I HAVE A DREAM by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Kadir Nelson On August 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington, Martin Luther King gave one of the most powerful and memorable speeches in our nation's history. His words, paired with Caldecott Honor winner Kadir Nelson's magnificent paintings, make for a picture book certain to be treasured by children and adults alike. The themes of equality and freedom for all are not only relevant today, 50 years later, but also provide young readers with an important introduction to our nation's past. The New Orleans Blended Books Club "BBC" is a Loving Festival outreach initiative that promotes literacy and provides New Orleans youth with greater access to diverse books about people of color, the multiracial experience, love and important social justice issues. The BBC also coordinates writing competitions, readings, and book signing events. We welcome your SUPPORT and in-kind donation of new and gently used books. Look Here for our book WISH LIST.
